“ We'll picnic on the grass by the stage. Look for Lindsay in a long green skirt. ”
Important NEW contact info.
I'm still in England, so Lindsay Bremner, my wonderful assistant organizer(!), will be hosting this event. Look for her on the grass in front of the stage: she'll be wearing a long green striped skirt and a white blouse. If you're asked whether you have a reservation to get into the near-stage area, say you're with Claire Newman's group.
Background about the performance.
The Independent Shakespeare Company is a group of performers who believe that to enjoy good theater (Shakespeare in particular) you shouldn't have to spend a small fortune. So for the past few years they have put on free performances over the summer in Barnsdall Park, where the atmosphere is fantastic and where their audience can sit on the grass enjoying a picnic before the play begins.
They do ask for donations afterwards if you feel so moved, but I promise you you'll be reaching into your pockets and purses with no hesitation!
Directions.
We will meet at Barnsdall Park (see here for directions) on the grass near to the stage at 6.30pm for a picnic prior to the performance, which starts at 7.30pm. If you have to arrive later than 6.30, please make sure you arrive well before the performance is due to start, as it would be nice for the group to sit together but space tends to become limited. If they ask if you have a reservation, give my name (Claire Newman). There's free parking but watch out for 'no parking' signs - it's better to drive down the hill and walk up than risk being towed.
Park information
There are restrooms and concession stands within the park. Please note that, as last year, you're not allowed to bring alcohol in with you, but you can still buy it at the concessions stands. Please also note that it can get very cold at night on the hillside, even if the day is hot, so bring extra layers or a blanket just in case!!
Important: I will close the 'yes' RSVPs at 6.30pm the day before the performance (Thursday June 26th) so that I can send a reservation e-mail to the company. They ask for this so they have an idea about numbers, and sometimes only allow people with reservations into the near-stage area to picnic (so these people get the best pick of where to sit for the performance).
